Early Maori were probably the first to find the hot bubbling pools secluded in the upland tussock country. No doubt drovers of the pioneering era were grateful for the therapeutic waters too, as they moved their huge flocks between Nelson and Christchurch through our dramatic high country backdrop that has changed little with the passing years.
Today a comfortable 90 minute drive from Christchurch brings us to the delightfully picturesque village of Hanmer Springs, fringed with trees, backed by mountain ranges and surrounded by exotic and native forest. Nowadays the drovers tents and daub huts of old are gone, replaced by an extensive selection of accommodation choices ranging from 5 star boutique Bed and Breakfast houses, through hotels and lodges, motels, rental holiday homes, backpackers and motor camps; truly something for everyone. These are complemented by fine restaurants, cheerful cafes and bars. There is shopping to enjoy and a myriad of recreation and adventure activities to choose from.
